Elections 2023: After Action Report

Elections+2023%3A+After+Action+Report

It was an interesting night politically both on the national stage and for hometown politics.

Starting off with the election that hits the closest to home for Cibola, the Board of Education elected three new members.

School Board:

In district-2 (Cibola’s district) Ronalda Tome-Warito has defeated long term incumbent Peggy Muller-Aragon with 42.33% of the vote, a 255 vote margin.

In district-1 Janelle Astorga won with 48.5 percent of the vote against Albuquerque Federation of Teachers candidate Robert Trujillo.

In district-4 Heather Benavidez handily defeated Moms for Liberty candidate Stephen Cecco by 7,681‬ votes.

Next is an election that, while not decided by only Cibola voters, will have an impact on our campus.

City Council:

In District-2 Joaquín Baca defeated two other candidates with a 52% vote share, replacing long term liberal on the council Issac Benton.

In District-8 Albuquerque saw retired police officer Daniel Champine retain a conservative voice on the council with his 54% victory replacing retiring councilor Trudy Jones.

In District-4 Brook Bassan faced a tough challenger, squeezing out a win with a close margin of victory of only 156‬ votes.

District-6, on the other hand, was too close to call and will go to a runoff election in 30 days between Nichole Rogers and Jeff Hoehn with Nichole Rogers having won the majority of voters, but not enough for an outright victory.

Now let’s talk money.

Bond initiatives:

All of the bond issues for Albuquerque passed easily with no issue dropping below 60% of the vote. The most important for Cibola students was the passing of the APS Mill Levy initiative, which continues the levy for another 7 years.  Bonds for everything ranging from drainage systems to fixing potholes passed with little opposition providing the city with funds.

I’m pleasantly surprised that Ronalda Tome-Warito won. She was my preferred candidate but with no way for a student to vote for a school district administrator besides being above the age of 18, that didn’t really matter.

I heard some pretty funny things about Peggy Muller-Aragón, chief among them that during an broadcast debate/conversation between Tome-Warito and that third guy (I think his first name is Ben?), those two spent a fair few minutes just speculating why Muller-Aragón wouldn’t show up. Also that she never approved of a single pay-raise for teachers. I don’t know if either of these are true, but she did act like she had somewhere more important to be than on a campaign trail or God forbid doing her job… Hopefully she can get back to doing that now that she’s going to be having quite a bit of free time on her hands.
